What is the chief source of biofuels in SA? Any luck with algae?

The main source for ethanol

The main source for ethanol as a biofuel in SA is maize. However, sugar cane has the potential to provide a great deal of ethanol at a better price. Ethanol Africa is set to be the major producer as they are in the process of building 7 maize-to-ethanol plants.

Biodiesel is produced in SA from the main feedstocks - soya, rape seed and soon Jatropha. One company in SA is using algae as a feedstock. This company is De Beers Fuels Ltd.
