Niger-Delta Militants Threaten to Strike

A militant group in the restive Niger-Delta region of Nigeria has threatened to unleash terror in the entire nation following a murder attempt on one of their detained leader, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari. The group, which goes by the name Joint Revolutionary Council (JRC), in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Cynthia Whyte, alleged that a murder attempt was carried out on the detained leader of the group-Niger-Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF)-on the 19th day of April, 2007. The group alleged that the murder attempt was orchestrated by the Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government, Boladei Igali. This attempt as explained by Whyte was masterminded through a conspiracy between hired assassin medical doctor of the Nigerian state led by the aforementioned Secretary. After long minutes of intense resistance, Dokubo-Asari was assaulted by four armed guards and severely battered.
The aforementioned militant group has since called on all group involved in the fight for the emancipation of the Niger-Delta to rise and carry all available weapons of war as the tail of the lion has been pulled.
Does this mean war? Are we going to see or witness the recent fury and rage on-going in the Niger-Delta in triple folds? But who then is truly the mastermind behind this attempted murder on Dokubo-Asari and what were his, her or their intentions? The militant group must get their facts right before acting, if at all they must act. But Nigeria needs peace and tranquility in the oil rich Niger-Delta region if substantial development is to be realized within the region. War will solve nothing but peace and sincere dialogue will not only solve everything but also heal years of transgression in the region.
