Recent Cases of Abduction Witnessed in the Niger-Delta
Two Turkish citizens identified as Marad and Ilear Izes, have been reported kidnapped by unknown gunmen at Olu Obasanjo Way, inside the city of Port Harcourt. The sad incidence was reported to have occurred during the Easter weekend. The duo, said to be engineers with Marta, a servicing company with Agip Petroleum Nigeria Plc were allegedly driving in their car to a ceremony at the Presidential Hotel at about 8pm of the said day when they were intercepted by unknown gunmen who took them to an unknown destination.
Till now, the whereabouts of the duo has not been ascertained and the group responsible for this recent abduction unknown. But it is however believed that this is one of the ruthless escapades of the Niger-Delta militants.
If these recurrent cases of abduction in the Niger-Delta region are not arrested, it is like to jeopardize Nigeria’s investment potentials in the oil industry. Surely the Niger-Delta is West Africa’s largest sedimentary basin and holds huge hydrocarbon reserves. But at the moment, the region remains poor in terms of security and this singular factor is likely to discourage potential investors even as the Nigerian government works at strengthening its energy sector.
